This little card sorts them out in a second: push the needle through the holes until you find the one it passes cleanly, and there's your size, marked in US on one side and metric on the other.

It doubles as a swatch ruler. The 5.5-inch edge is marked in inches and the 3-inch edge in centimeters, both with fine gradations, so you can count stitches and rows over your gauge swatch without hunting for a tape measure. Small enough to live in your project bag permanently, flat enough that it never adds bulk.

The conversion chart covers US, metric, UK and Canadian sizing for both knitting needles and crochet hooks, which is exactly what you need when a pattern from another country lists a size you don't recognize. Fourteen graduated holes run from US 2 through US 15.
