Site update: yarn calculator, News and Yarnpedia

Over the past few weeks we have been working on the site quite a lot, and we plan to keep going. Here is what has changed.

1. A yarn calculator on every by-the-gram page

Every yarn we sell by weight now has a calculator right at the top of its page. It answers the two questions we get most often: how many strands do I need to hold together, and how much yarn should I actually order.

How it works

On the left, choose the finished yarn weight you want to knit at — 1 Strand / Original, Fingering, Sport, DK, Worsted, or Aran / Bulky / Jumbo. If you need something that is not on the list, type your own value into Custom weight. The calculator then shows the closest number of strands to hold together to reach that weight, along with the approximate meters or yards per 100g.

On the right, enter the finished length your project needs, in meters or yards. The calculator converts it into grams and tells you the minimum you would need to order if you want us to split the yarn between cones — because each cone has to hold at least 50g.

A reminder: splitting is completely optional. You can order any number of cones, or take the whole amount on a single cone and divide it yourself at home. The only rule is the 50g minimum per cone.

2. News on the homepage

We added a News section to the homepage, so our updates can live on the site and not only on Instagram.

We’ll use it for shop news, new arrivals, and restocks, especially yarns that are back after being sold out, something our current shop functionality doesn’t really have a way to show.

We’re not going to fill the section with old news just to make it look busy. We’d rather spend that time making the website better. So we’re starting from here.

3. Yarnpedia

We also added Yarnpedia, where we write about yarn and the details that matter: fibers, weights, substitutions, and the small things that make a project work. If there is something you would like us to cover, do not hesitate to ask.
